Good morning everybody. It’s 10:14 AM. I really hope that you can hear me, got the fan on, as we are going through a heat wave at the moment in England as well as other places in the world. So, yeah, the fan is on this morning.
I wanted to, well, I wanted to share a lot of different things for this next journal, but what’s been on my heart to share has actually been on the topic of vanity. And I just wanted to read, Proverbs chapter 31, verse 30 to all of you. So it mentions. And this is a King James version:
“Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised.”
Amen.
So why I’m reading that is because, I’ve been reflecting on, My decision, alongside my husband, to not get our daughters ears pierced. She is a beautiful, beautiful girl. But that beauty, it should stem from the inside. It should be the character, it should be. You know, her gentle, her gentle, her gentle and tender spirit. But what you tend to find is there’s a cultural expectation, when you have a girl, to get her ears pierced, because it’s gonna look pretty, she’s gonna look amazing, it’ll go, with the expectation of maybe grandparents or maybe friends who have daughters as well, um, people, just expect you to get them done. And what I’ve been kind of going through with that is at first I thought, you know what? Yeah, let’s get them done. And I’ve had to pray on this subject quite a few times.
I’m grateful that the Holy Spirit has led me to scriptures that have really just helped me to make a certain decision which is to not get them pierced.
And that’s not to say that getting your ears pierced is a bad thing, you know what I mean?
I think what I’m getting at here is that it’s always the reasoning, why are we doing certain things? And if I’m being very honest, it was due to pressure. It was due to not feeling left out.
I was convincing myself that that was not the case, but the more I looked at my reasoning and reflected on my own heart posture, I was able to see that actually you’re doing this because people are telling you you’re supposed to, um, making you feel bad for doing it, and telling you things like, oh, if you get it done when they’re very young, it’s not going to hurt.
Getting your ears pierced, whatever age is going to hurt. It’s just, yeah, there’s pain there either way. So, Yeah, I want to, um, stop approaching things with this sort of direction of just doing things and not understanding why I’m doing it. So this time of reflection and reflecting on just the word of God and speaking to my husband about has really helped to shed some light on why we don’t want to get our daughters ears pierced And that may be something that she wants to do when she’s older. And we’re not opposed to that. But what I would definitely be praying for is that she’s not doing it because she feels pressured to do it. She’s doing it because she’s not doing it for the pressure, but just something that She’d like to have like, she’d like to have earrings. And I want that to be something that she gets the opportunity to voice for herself. Yeah, so I’m quite interested to know from any of you out there who have daughters and whether you’ve gotten your daughter’s ears pierced or you haven’t. What was your thinking behind these decisions? Did you wait? until they were older. And if you didn’t, what was your reasoning? I know that as parents we are all just trying to do the best. But I always go back to How I want to train her up. And I want to train up to know Christ and it all starts with your heart. It starts with why you do things. So I don’t want to feel pressured to just do something for the sake of it. So I pray that she will just come to make her own decision outside of pressure and just praying over every decision that she makes. And I think it’s sad that people will equate these things to what makes her beautiful and how some people are very disturbed by just not her not having earrings. And I think, again, it’s more driven by one’s emotions of maybe they felt that they’ve been able to share in other people’s experiences of them getting their daughter’s ears pierced and now that you’re not doing it. It’s like, I don’t get that as well. And this is where for me, I find that to be wrong because it becomes now more about ourselves. Christ is not in that decision. And that to me, does not make sense. It’s about him. It’s not about us. So, how we make our decisions, how we guard our hearts and Guard our mind should be with his word, always at the front and centre. And that’s how I want us to continue to raise our daughter because one day, you know, if I did get her ears pierced And then maybe she asked me why I can’t imagine telling her I got it done because I felt like everyone was telling me to do it. And I didn’t want to disappoint them.
So I got yours ears pierced. You know what I mean? So, Yeah. Vanity is quite something. I’ve been reading a lot about it in the Bible, um, with my husband in the last few weeks, and there’s so much great wisdom in there. So I want to focus on her character. It’s even mentioned in 1 Peter 3-4 where it talks about almost the dangers of outwardly appearance.
“Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.”
So it’s all there. And the more I look at her every day and I see how Christ wants us to train up our children, I continuously feel led to focus on the inward side, the inward part of her, her heart posture. And less so on the glitz and the glam of how the world want you to portray your child, especially, you know, a daughter. So, yeah, I hope you enjoy this journal. And I pray that you feel blessed with what I’ve shared. And most importantly, may your home be filled with peace this week and I’ll speak to you next time. Bye.
